Area Codes in the USA.

Area codes are the first three digits in a 10-digit North American telephone number. They direct calls to the correct geographic region. They also help carriers manage numbering resources and avoid conflicts.

How Many Area Codes Are There?

The United States has roughly 335 active area codes as of 2025. New codes appear each year as existing blocks fill up. Retired codes are rare but do occur when regions merge or expand.

History of Area Codes

The North American Numbering Plan launched in 1947. The original list held 86 codes. Early phones used rotary dials, so numbers with low “finger travel” were assigned to high-population states like New York (212) and California (213). Demand grew with fax machines in the 1980s, pagers in the 1990s, and mobile and VoIP lines after 2000. Splits divided large regions. Overlays stacked new codes on top of old ones to keep numbers in service while adding capacity.

Most Common or Recognized Area Codes

These codes are famous due to population density, business hubs, entertainment ties, or pop-culture mentions.

Detailed Look at Selected Area Codes

213 Area Code

Serves downtown Los Angeles and surrounding neighborhoods. One of California’s originals from 1947. Overlaid by 323 in 1998. Both codes now share the same footprint, so ten-digit dialing is required.

646 Area Code

An overlay for Manhattan. Introduced in 1999 when 212 numbers ran out. Popular with startups and mobile lines seeking a New York identity.

347 Area Code

Covers the Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, and Staten Island along with 718 and 929. Launched in 1999 as the first overlay to 718. Often assigned to wireless devices.

917 Area Code

Created in 1992 for New York City wireless and pagers. Now used for any service in all five boroughs. Considered prestigious as early cellular adopters held 917 numbers.

929 Area Code

Added in 2011 as a second overlay for NYC’s outer boroughs. Allows new numbers without forcing existing customers to change.

323 Area Code

Overlay to 213 in central Los Angeles. Includes Hollywood, Echo Park, and East LA. Initially a split in 1998, converted to an overlay complex in 2017.

626 Area Code

Serves the San Gabriel Valley and eastern Los Angeles County. Split from 818 in 1997. Introduced ten-digit dialing in 2021 to accommodate the national 988 lifeline code.

424 Area Code

Overlay to 310 in coastal and South Bay Los Angeles. Activated in 2006. Covers Santa Monica, Beverly Hills, and the LAX corridor when 310 is exhausted.

786 Area Code

Overlay to 305 in Miami-Dade County. Implemented in 1998. Handles Miami, Miami Beach, and Hialeah numbers as the metro area grows.

415 Area Code

One of California’s original codes. Now limited to San Francisco and Marin County after multiple splits. Shares an overlay with 628 since 2015 to prevent exhaustion.

310 Area Code

Created in 1991 from a 213 split. Serves Los Angeles’s Westside, South Bay, and parts of Malibu. Overlay 424 later added to keep pace with demand.

206 Area Code

Original 1947 code for Washington State. Now restricted to Seattle and some nearby islands. Will be overlaid by 564 in 2025 because available numbers are nearly gone.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a split and an overlay?

A split divides one region into two. Customers in the new region get a new code. An overlay adds a new code to the same geographic area, so everyone keeps their old number but must dial ten digits for local calls.

Why do major cities have so many area codes?

High population, business growth, and multiple devices per person exhaust available numbers faster. Overlays stack new codes rather than forcing changes to existing ones.

Are area codes tied to state borders?

Generally yes, but a few codes cross borders in lightly populated areas. Numbering authorities prefer clean state boundaries but leave room for exceptions.

Can I keep my area code if I move?

Yes. Mobile number portability lets you keep the same ten-digit number anywhere in the United States.

Do area codes affect call costs?

Within the U.S., most plans include nationwide calling. Long-distance surcharges are rare on modern mobile or VoIP services.

Who assigns new area codes?

The North American Numbering Plan Administrator (NANPA) works with state regulators and telecom providers. They study exhaust forecasts and approve relief plans about 30 months before numbers run out.

What is ten-digit dialing?

Dialing the area code plus the seven-digit local number on every call. It becomes mandatory wherever an overlay exists to avoid conflicts between overlapping codes.

How many new area codes appear each year?

The United States adds roughly five to ten new codes annually, depending on regional growth and device demand.

Why are codes like 212 or 415 considered status symbols?

They are among the oldest codes and link directly with major cities. Limited availability makes them scarce and desirable.

What happens when an area code reaches exhaustion?

NANPA issues a relief order. Regulators either split the region, overlay a new code, or use numbering conservation measures such as thousand-block pooling.

Where Are Area Codes Used

Area codes follow the North American Numbering Plan, known as NANP.
The plan includes the United States, Canada, fifteen Caribbean nations, and three Pacific territories.
All NANP numbers share the country code +1, making calls appear “domestic” between members.
Outside NANP, each country creates its own plan. Mexico uses +52, the U.K. +44, Australia +61, and so on.
Because NANP is so large, its 467 codes serve a combined population of roughly 380 million people.

States With the Most Codes

California owns thirty-eight codes. Los Angeles County alone has ten of them.
Texas runs twenty-eight codes, including 210, 214, 254, 281, 346, 512, 713, 817, 830, 915, 936, 940, and 979.
Florida carries twenty-three codes. Its high tourist count drives demand for extra mobile lines.
New York claims twenty-two codes, split between downstate overlays (212, 646, 332, 917) and upstate regions (315, 518, 716).
Illinois lists seventeen codes, with Chicago using four overlays: 312, 773, 872, and 708 for the suburbs.
States with one code include Alaska, Delaware, Hawaii, Maine, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Vermont, Wyoming, West Virginia, and Rhode Island.

Telephone Number Format

Standard format is NPA-NXX-XXXX, sometimes shown as (NPA) NXX-XXXX.
NPA is the 3-digit area code. NXX is the 3-digit prefix. XXXX is the 4-digit line number.
The system can yield 7.9 billion combinations, but many are unusable because of reserved blocks.

NPA – Area Code

The first digit ranges 2–9. Zero and one were not allowed originally to avoid confusion with operators.
Toll-free codes all start with 8. Premium-rate codes start with 9.
Area code 710 is reserved for U.S. government emergency networks and hardly ever appears to the public.

NXX – Prefix or Exchange

Prefixes once issued in 10 000-line chunks. Number pooling now issues many in 1 000-line chunks.
Unused prefixes remain dormant until demand rises. Urban codes such as 212 have almost no idle prefixes left.

Subscriber Number

Four digits equal 10 000 possible lines for each prefix.
Large mobile carriers sometimes burn entire blocks for internal testing or swapped SIM cards.

Assignment of Phone Numbers

NANPA acts as the registry. State public-utility commissions enforce local rules.
Carriers apply for prefixes through a “pooling administrator” run by iconectiv under FCC contract.
Emergency services reserve special prefixes like 911, 988, and 611.

The Original 86 Area Codes of 1947

AT&T assigned ninety-two codes on paper, but only eighty-six went live that year.
Codes with the lowest pulse counts went to high-density corridors to shorten rotary-dial time.
Hawaii joined with area code 808 in 1957, and Alaska 907 in 1957, expanding the map beyond the contiguous U.S.

Growth in Demand

The pager boom in the late 1980s absorbed thousands of numbers per hospital and taxi fleet.
By 1999 the United States had twice as many wireless accounts as landlines.
Fax machines and dial-up modems each required dedicated lines during peak internet growth.

Splits Versus Overlays

Splits forced half a region to change its code. Overlays let everyone keep numbers but require ten-digit dialing.
Public pushback was fierce at first. Businesses disliked reprinting stationery.
By 2000 overlays were preferred because cell-phone memory made ten digits easy.

Number Pooling

Pooling started in Illinois and Colorado pilot projects in 1998 and went nationwide in 2002.
The change saved as many as five million unused numbers in the Chicago market alone.
Canada does not mandate pooling, so its overlay rate remains higher per capita than the U.S. rate.

Modern Usage

Landline prefixes still dominate 68 percent of assignments, but many feed VoIP adapters and PBX trunks, not copper loops.
Wireless prefixes account for about 30 percent, M2M and IoT the rest.
Carrier mergers often strand prefixes that may never reach full capacity.

Dialing Rules Today

Ten-digit dialing is universal anywhere an overlay exists. Seven digits remain only in rural single-code zones.
FCC required every area with the 988 central office to convert to ten digits by October 2021.

Non-Geographic Area Codes

Toll-free block now includes 800, 833, 844, 855, 866, 877, and 888. The unused 822 and 880-889 ranges are held for future toll-free expansion.
Premium 900 traffic has fallen 95 percent since its 1991 peak because of internet billing options.
Area code 500 once hosted “personal mobility numbers.” Few are active today.
700 service codes let corporations route long-distance over private networks; most calls fail if dialed by mistake.

What does the Future Hold for Area Codes in the US?

NANPA projects exhaustion of current three-digit code space beyond 2048 under worst-case demand.
Industry groups have discussed moving to four-digit area codes and keeping seven-digit subscriber numbers, producing 80 billion combinations.
VoIP number-sharing and advanced pooling may delay any drastic expansion plan.
